As a young politician, Winston Churchill would practice his speeches by addressing the orchard at the rear of princess Mary’s Place. He would project his voice at full volume and make points with vigor and flourish. Today, very few people have access to such a private place. Public Speaking is not a gift. It is a learned and developed skill, which is reinforced by practice and supportive critical analysis. If you aspire to communicate with others, large or small audiences, as well as being comfortable within yourself, first learn the basic simple skills. Your private place to practice can be in your own home, with the kids and television as your audience. Then, take the plunge and offer to speak somewhere at a party or club event. Before you learn the skills and make that first appointment to give a presentation, your concern focuses on, “Can I do it?” Once committed, you focus changes onto, “What do I say?” And before you know it, people are applauding and saying what a good speaker you are. And then you won’t be able to shut up so learn more stuff so you can be interesting!
